The Barclays Premier League surprised fans last weekend with a few shock results. Newcastle defeated Liverpool at home Saturday morning in an ill-tempered game. The referee gave seven yellow cards, four to Newcastle and three to Liverpool. Pérez scored the only goal in the 73rd minute. Burnley held Arsenal for 70 minutes, but Alexis Sánchez single-handedly bailed Arsenal out with two goals, while Calum Chambers, a new signing from Southampton, added one as well.
Chelsea defeated QPR in a game that was far closer than predicted by the bookies. Oscar put Chelsea ahead in the 32nd minute. Charlie Austin equalized for QPR in the 62nd minute. Eden Hazard won the match for Chelsea when he scored a penalty in the 75th minute after Eduardo Vargas brought him down in the box. Everton drew nil-nil with ten-man Swansea. Six yellow cards were given, and Jonjo Shelvey was sent off late in the game. Southampton defeated Hull City after Victor Wanyama scored a 40 yard chip when Hull City goalkeeper Eldin Jankupovic cleared the ball poorly.
Sophomore Matthias Von Zeier, a Hull City fan, laid the blame on Robbie Brady. He said, “I don’t blame Jankupovic. Robbie Brady played a terrible pass across Jankupovic to his weak foot. Jankupovic did his best to clear the ball out of danger. Jankupovic was not in the wrong.”
West Brom defeated Leicester away after Esteban Cambiasso scored a goal soon after the beginning of the second half. Stoke dominated West Ham, but drew two-two after Enner Valencia and Stewart Downing scored for West Ham. Victor Moses and Mame Biram Diouf scored for Stoke. The Manchester Derby ended in a fourth consecutive win for the Blues after Sergio Agüero scored for Manchester City. Chris Smalling incurred the wrath of Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal after picking up two yellow cards early in the game for a charge on City goalkeeper Joe Hart, and a poor tackle. Tottenham fought back to beat Aston Villa. Andreas Weimann scored for Aston Villa in the 60th minute, but Nacer Chadli equalised in the 84th minute, and Harry Kane scored in the 90th minute to win the match.
Sunderland beat Crystal Palace 3-1 with a brace from Steven Fletcher and a goal for Jordi Gómez. Wes Brown scored an own goal for Crystal Palace, and Mile Jedinak was sent off near the end of the game for Crystal Palace.
