Gym fails to motivate students to be active
Jan 26, 2016
Students dread going to gym class because of the structure. Gym classes try to force students to enjoy fitness and value the necessity of constant training. Students want to play sports and enjoy the social connection that sports provide.
The coaches are required by the state to get the students to meet certain benchmarks. This clash between coaches and the students creates opposition and causes students to resent the form of fitness forced upon them.
Junior Dylan Dodge said, “I liked gym because I was already fit, and I could easily handle the running required. Gym would be more fun if we were encouraged to play any sport we choose during the class.”
The government’s control and standardization of gym places students in direct opposition to the coaches. This has created a culture of negativity towards fitness for the average student.
