Debate team places at Jackson High School tourney

Debaters Katie Austensen (freshman), Owen Henahan (freshman), Kate Cullen (freshman, Jackson Fuentes (junior) and Samuel Ellis (sophomore) are considered the tournament’s “breadwinners” after receiving both quarterfinals trophies and speaking awards.

Over Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, the debate team traveled to Jackson High School.  Students from the freshman and junior classes received awards for both making it to the quarterfinals round of the tournament and for qualifying for individual speaking awards.

In the freshman class, partners Owen Henahan and Kate Cullen placed sixth overall out of 23 teams and made it to the quarterfinals round.  Furthermore, freshman Katie Austensen placed seventh overall out of 46 speakers.

In the sophomore and junior classes, sophomore Samuel Ellis and junior Jackson Fuentes worked together to make it to the quarterfinals for their first time.  As partners, Ellis and Fuentes were able to place fifth overall out of 32 competing teams.  Furthermore, both partners were recognized for their speaking abilities in the tournament.  Sophomore Samuel Ellis placed fifth overall out of 64 speakers, and junior Jackson Fuentes placed ninth overall out of 64.
