McIntosh has welcomed a new school counselor to its staff; Starting her first year at McIntosh High School, Marisa Dobson is a counselor assisting over 300 Chiefs. Dobson came from Saint Mary’s academy in Fayetteville after spending two years there, which is a much smaller school compared to McIntosh.
“The graduating classes were only like 35 people,” Dobson said.
However, Dobson is excited to get to know the students of McIntosh high school she will be counseling for as the year goes on.
Similarly to Dobson starting her first year, it is common for first year students to feel weary talking to adults about their new plans being a high schooler. It is imperative that schools have counselors who communicate as well as working through goals and confusions with students everywhere. Luckily, Dobson is here to talk to the Chiefs who seek out help, “I feel very lucky that I do not have a hard time talking to people, ” “I think it’s fun,” Dobson said.
Prior to the start of Dobson’s career, she attended Louisiana State University and graduated with her Bachelor of Science and Masters of Education.
“I went to school to teach English, because English was my favorite subject and I thought everybody must love it,” Dobson said.
Dobson originally started off her career as an English teacher for Denham Springs High school and East Ascensions High School. When Dobson was teaching ninth and tenth grade English, she found the most rewarding moments when she was assisting students and helping them find what they are good at.
“I found the times I felt the most fulfilled at my job is when I was helping the students individually, like conquering challenging things,” Dobson said.
Dobson brings a wealth of counseling experience from St. Mary’s and The Lovett School and is aiming to make a significant impact on academic success and the well-being of our Chiefs.
