I love Sabrina Carpenter. I’ve been a fan since “Singular Act 1” which is Sabrina’s third studio album and I definitely still am a fan. What I’m not a fan of though is this album. I find a lot of the tracks just bland. I don’t hate any of them but I just don’t find myself listening to most of them. I’ll just listen to something better. I wish in the future she would go back to an “emails I can’t send” type of album but we will see. Here’s what I think of each track.
“Manchild”
“Manchild” is my favorite song off the album. I actually listen to it and I find it very fun. It’s not perfect by any means but it’s still an enjoyable listen. I do find it a little too similar to a few other tracks by her but that’s not a jab because it happens. The music video for this one is my favorite by her too. The directing was actually good and it felt like an indie movie which is what it was going for most likely.
“Tears”
“Tears” is good but why is it even a single? I like the fun lyrics and wordplay. The main lyric, “tears running down my thighs”, is the opposite of what I expected but it ate! But it feels like something is missing. The song feels too short and it just comes and goes. The production feels rushed also, where it feels empty in some parts. The music video is pretty good too and carries the song. It looks great and it was fun!
“My Man on Willpower and Sugar Talking”
If I’m being honest, “My Man on Willpower” and “Sugar Talking” I have only listened to once and it will be my only listen. I don’t think they are bad it’s just I don’t think anything really stands out from them.
“We Almost Broke Up Again Last Night”
“We Almost Broke Up Again Last Night” was pretty alright. I like the lyrics and message it conveys. It is a pretty sad song with an upbeat-ish tone. Although I feel it works because of the high someone gets with a hookup after an argument but you don’t feel that way long term. So with that, I find myself listening to this again. I don’t think it’s anything crazy but it’s still enjoyable.
“Nobody’s Son” and “Never Getting Laid”
“Nobody’s Son” and “Never Getting Laid” were decent but felt a little too sonically similar. It very well could be just me but here in the album I just felt it blended in with the rest of the album.
“When Did You get Hot?” and “Go Go Juice”
“When Did You Get Hot?” and “Go Go Juice” are just not my thing at all.”Go Go Juice” was just such a mess and just overstimulating and “When Did You Get Hot” was just so forgettable and boring. I’m gonna state again, I love Sabrina but this just is not my album.
“Don’t Worry II’I Make You Worry”
“Don’t Worry I’ll Make You Worry” is my favorite. I know I might get sniped by one of the “Espresso” fans (no shade) but I think it’s probably the only unique song. Also the lyrics and production are so good. Especially her vocals. I don’t like Jack Antonoff that much in terms of production but the singer majority of the time sounds great with him. I don’t know what crack he puts in it but oh my gosh.
“House Tour”
“House Tour” is pretty enjoyable and I can see why everyone likes it. It’s a fun radio song, which has it’s benefits in terms of streams, popularity with the general public and obviously radio play but it lacks what makes it a memorable song that her hits like “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” have. I will listen to it for now but like I was saying I don’t find myself and others listening to this long term and coming back to it.
“Goodbye”
Finally “Goodbye” is my least favorite. I’m so sad to say this but I don’t think I’ll ever listen to this ever again. This is the only song I feel is bad. It’s so boring to me and literally made my head hurt on second listen. Sabrina, maybe you should say goodbye because you tested my patience.
I just hope we get an “emails I can’t send” kind of album again. If we can’t get that, at least one with better lyrics. I really wanted to like this, and maybe I will in the future, but for the first time I’m torn on a new Sabrina album.
