“They’re people who terrorize and take innocent lives for money. They sowed their fate when they took this job. I’m just the reaper.”- Raiden
Fans long awaited the return of Raiden, the uber ninja-cyborg whose spinoff was announced years ago. He was previously a non-playable ally in some of the preceding MG games, but MG Rising: Revengeance finally gives players the chance to control his incredible samurai skills, and after playing it, I can wholeheartedly assert that this game is a masterpiece.
Revengeance takes place several years into the future and centers on Raiden and his new goal in life. As the quote above illustrates, Raiden is a (robotic) man who fights for the innocent (and kills those guilty of harming them). He and his allies strive to make the world a more peaceful place. Unfortunately, private military corporations (PMCs) make large sums of money through war and chaos; as such, the PMCs do everything they can to ensure the continuity of global conflicts. One PMC in particular has become worthy of note: Desperado Enforcement, LLC., a PMC that is responsible for several major conflicts, as well as the murder of countless innocents. Raiden and his allies must prevent Desperado from spreading war; the easiest way to accomplish this goal is, of course, to destroy Desperado itself. Thus, while attempting to quell the fires of war in numerous places, Raiden must hunt down the leaders of Desperado and bring an end to their injustice.
The story of Revengeance has that classic “Hideo Kojima feel” that all MG games have had. The plot has a great complexity and depth to it, complete with plot twists that surprise you every time. Another Kojima element that is featured is the unique cinematography that the MG franchise has become known for. By unique, of course, I mean fantastic; the inematics have an incredibly rich, theatrical aura about them that never fails to impress.
Additionally, this is by far the best ninja game I’ve ever played. The gameplay revolves around brilliant swordplay that makes you feel just as cool- if not, even cooler- than some of the coolest ninjas in Hollywood movies. Revengeance is an ideal example of a game that truly empowers its players.
All in all, MG Rising: Revengeance is a definite must have for any gamer who enjoys action and awesomeness. Seriously, this game brings a whole new definition to the word “epic.” As of right now, you won’t find a better ninja-style game. And if you haven’t played any of the other MG games, that’s okay; even though there are several references to the rest of the franchise, this game is meant to be a standalone spin-off, so anyone can enjoy this game, regardless of whether you even like the other MG games.
