Ask Edna No. 5

Why do people hang stockings above the fireplace?

Vintage Coca Cola Santa Claus

Sockless and Confused

Dear Sockless,

If you have ever seen the animated movie “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” (a Christmas classic if you ask me) it explains it there. The “legend” is that Santa, aka Kris Kringle, was not allowed to give toys to the children. The families would hang their sock up to dry above the fire place and Santa would hide the toys in the socks. I hope that answers your question!

Dear Edna,

Why does Santa Claus wear red?

-It’s not really my favorite color

Dear Not my favorite color,

The color red is vibrant and easily noticeable. He wore a traditional bishop’s cape, which was — you guessed it — red. That red imagery endured through the centuries. Santa’s suit got a redesign in 1931 after artist Haddon Sundblom was charged with creating an image of Santa for the Coca Cola Company. Sundblom added some new features but kept the idea of a red garment. And that is what  we know today as Santa’s red suit.

Dear Edna,

Is Santa real?

-I don’t think I believe anymore,

Dear Believe,

Shame on you! Of COURSE Santa is real. You can expect coal in your stockings this year.
