Varsity girls tennis on the fresh start

Categories:

The McIntosh girls tennis team started their season on the brand-new, on campus tennis courts, and with new varsity and junior varsity players, the varsity team won their first game which motivated them to continue the streak.

The team made goals for this year. First, they wanted to become region champions for the second year in a row. Their second goal is to become state champions, which they achieved in 2021. Junior Laura Bueno is a tennis player on the varsity team.

“The team’s goal is to win regionals and state. We are working really hard to achieve these goals together,”  Bueno said.

One of their objectives is to have better communication as a team to make it easier to meet those goals.

“I’m glad we’re all getting along and we support each other when we play matches,” Bueno said.

The tennis team played Carrolton on March 23.

“The score of my last game was a 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 [and] I won.  It was a really competitive match, my opponent played really good so I really enjoyed it,” Bueno said.

The team plays as much as they can by playing an extra one or two hours at the local courts after their practice at school. Junior Penelope Klein is a tennis player on the varsity team.

“We organize a lot of practices outside of school. I mean, we have practices after school on the tennis courts, but sometimes we like to go to a community court or public court and just hang out and play tennis. And it’s really good for socializing and bonding with your teammates while also practicing,” Klein said.

Many girls in the varsity team who have played for a while know that tennis is not easy to start for everyone. Most of the time tennis is a harder sport that is usually played with two or four players.

“I think the tennis team is a really great experience, not just as an athlete, but as a person, like an adolescent, adolescent developing because it teaches you the importance of hard work and perseverance in adversity,” Klein said.
