After one of the most successful careers in international soccer, Abby Wambach, a member of the United States Women’s National Team, retired from the game in 2015. Coming off a successful year culminating with a World Cup victory, the thirty-five year old decided it was time to step away from the game. After her retirement, the world’s greatest goal-scorer was arrested on DUI in April 2016. In her book, “Forward,” Wambach has cited that arrest as a wake up call to alert her to the fact that she had a problem with alcohol. She has since admitted to abusing alcohol throughout her international soccer career. Some students at McIntosh found the news about Wambach rather shocking.

Senior Chandler Witucki, a member of the McIntosh soccer team, said, “I was shocked when I heard the news about Abby Wambach. I can’t believe someone that successful could have abused alcohol throughout her career. She’s one of my favorite players, so I was definitely disappointed when I heard the news, but I will always be a fan of hers.”

Senior Connor McNally disagreed. He said “I have been a fan of Wambach for a long time. I have always thought that she was a positive role model and tried to make the best choices for her team. However, after this news, I’m not sure if I can still look up to her the same way I used to.”
