Varsity soccer beats Northgate and Drew
Mar 23, 2016
The Chiefs soccer program continued its excellent season with wins over region rival Northgate on March 11 and Drew on March 15.
The girls kicked off at 5:30 p.m. at Northgate, who were last year’s state runners-up, and came home with a 2-0 victory. Sophomore Kayla Wilcox and senior Caroline Laux both scored, one in each half; this victory brought the team’s record to 5-0.
The boys played just after the girls. Winning 2-0 at half time because goals scored by junior Gus Fidler and senior Luke Mohney, the Chiefs finished 3-1; Gus scored the final Chiefs goal. The boys’ record improved to 7-0 for the season and 4-0 in the region after the Northgate victory.
Both teams followed their wins away at Northgate with a home victory as they played Charles R. Drew March 15. The girls crushed Drew 15-0; three girls, senior Abby Ott, junior Taylor Malasek and sophomore Lauren Phillips, scored hat tricks. Freshman Mackenzie Rohn scored a brace, and sophomores Emma Whitson and Haley Mason scored a goal each. The game ended at halftime under the mercy rule.
The boys team won 7-0 for the 300th time under Coach Bunky Colvin later that night and improved to 8-0 this season. The Chiefs opened the scoring early with a goal by senior Aaron Brewer, assisted by Gus, just 17 seconds after kickoff. Both teams will play St. Pius at home March 18.
