Running form proves important to increasing pace

Kyle Ewers, Assistant Sports Editor

Running form is essential to success in track;  it is one of the driving forces behind speed. Incorrect form leads to injuries, such as back problems and knee problems.

When a runner lacks proper form, he spends more energy fighting himself than on moving forward faster. Landing on the heels slows the pace and can lead to impact injuries over time. A runner should land almost flat footed or towards the ball of the foot. Arms should move in a back and forth motion that promotes increased speed and faster foot movement. Each step should be long enough to cover enough distance to keep one moving forward at a steady pace. Stride can easily be extended by lifting the knee up on the back swing of each step.

Junior Xander Wilson said, “When I’m running, I make sure I focus on my form to help my speed and decrease the necessary effort.”
