Super Bowl XLIX thrilled football fans with a win in the closing seconds for the New England Patriots. With 20 seconds left on the game clock, Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll inexplicably called a pass play when the Seahawks were less than three yards from the end zone. Rookie New England cornerback Malcolm Butler intercepted Russell Wilson’s pass in the end zone, guaranteeing a Patriots victory.

The Patriots became the first team in the history of the Super Bowl to win after trailing by double digits; they were trailing 24-14 midway through the fourth quarter. Tom Brady threw the winning pass to wide receiver Julian Edelman with 2:02 left in the game. Brady would go on to win the MVP award for his four touchdown passes, raising his number of career Super Bowl touchdowns to 13, which gives him the record for most Super Bowl touchdowns, a statistic before held by Joe Montana . He also threw 37 completed passes, also a Super Bowl record. Sophomore Matthias Von Zeier said, “I thought it was a really good game, and since I don’t support either team, it was a very exciting game.”

At half-time, Katy Perry starred alongside special guests Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliot. The show opened with Perry riding a giant robotic lion, and closed with Perry floating through the air on a giant star.

After the game, Coach Carroll was widely criticized on social media for calling a pass play when Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch was available. Lynch is one of the best running backs in the NFL, averaging 4.7 yards per carry this season. According to the BBC, former Dallas Cowboys wide reciever Terrell Owens said, “That play call will haunt Pete for the rest of his career.”
