“Wednesday,” an original Netflix series based on “The Addams Family,” follows Wednesday Addams, as she attends school at Nevermore Academy, while she uncovers the mystery of who is behind the multiple killings in the area.
SPOILER WARNING
In season two, Wednesday is again, stuck in the middle of a series of murders at her school, this time by killer ravens led by a mysterious one eyed raven. The first twist is when we see that the person controlling the ravens is a lady named Juli Spannegal, a seemingly innocent assistant at Willow Hill Psychiatric facility. The same place Tyler, the hyde (which is a monster that killed a bunch of people in season one) is being kept. We are revealed that she is the daughter of Augustus Stonehearst, past director of the psychiatric facility and was given avian powers with experiments.
This plot twist wasn’t well written. Her character wasn’t as memorable as characters in the past season. When it was revealed that she was controlling the ravens I had to think back and say ‘Who is this again?’ The pacing of it felt like a last minute decision and that it wasn’t thought out well enough. In the first season, we had more clues leading up to the plot twists In this season, it felt unnatural. We never learned why the raven had one eye or why the assistant Lurch had a matching one. I am hoping that this gets brought up again in season three.
The second twist happens towards the middle, when we discover that Pugsley’s zombie, is found out to be Tyler’s uncle, Issac Night. Now this plot twist I really liked. It was one that I never saw coming until it was revealed. But, it was done better than the last one. It felt thought out and like they put a lot of time into it. As I was rewatching it I could see all the foreshadowing and clues that led up to the twist.
Another new character I found interesting this season was Agnes, Wednesday’s ex stalker. The stalker plot came from the first season just after Wednesday received a new phone and got pictures and threats sent to her from an unknown number. At this time, Agnes wasn’t even enrolled at Nevermore, so it makes no sense that it was her. The plot continuity between shows doesn’t stay the same and it bugs me. But, I do love Agnes’s character development later in the show. I love how she becomes her own person instead of just trying to replicate Wednesday in everything she does.
Overall, besides for a few plot holes, season two of Wednesday was very good and I highly recommend watching it if you want to bring an extra spooky start to your Halloween season.
