One of the most controversial topics among students and educators alike is whether MLA formatting truly helps writing or whether it is something that wastes time and makes the work too confusing to read.

Freshman Tate Thornton said, “I feel [MLA format] has improved a lot since the last edition, but still having to put URL’s for websites is rather inconvenient for everyone.  I think it can help your writing, but if you don’t know the format by heart then it just makes it more annoying. I think academic writing takes the passion out of writing.”

When asked if academic writing takes the passion out of writing, freshman Kareena Rampersad said, “Yes, absolutely…Sometimes [MLA format] can help, but other times it’s kind of annoying.”
