Oh Christmas Tree

Decorating a Christmas tree is a common family traditioon.

It is that time of year again where Christmas commercials play, neighbors put the Christmas lights up a bit too early again and carolers begin their  rehearsals. It seems Christmas just comes around the corner too early every year, but many students say the presents, music and hot chocolate tempt them into celebrating early with holiday cheer. The one thing many students question, however, is when it is the proper time to actually start celebrating Christmas.

Junior Dia Gault said Christmas should be celebrated immediately, right after Halloween. She said she loves listening to Christmas music right after Halloween is over. She said her reason for celebrating early is because everybody is happy. She said, “Things look nice, like decorations and gifts.” She said she normally surfs the Internet for deals for Christmas gifts. She admits that she even starts to draw Christmas trees on her notes.

Junior Meredith Kelly has other plans. She said she believes Christmas should start being celebrated after Thanksgiving. She said she also believes Christmas music should not be played until the day after Thanksgiving. For those celebrating Christmas too early, she said “It’s like jinxing it. If you celebrate Christmas too early, you’ll get sick of it.” She said her family puts the Christmas tree up the day after Thanksgiving. Then on the next day, she said she starts making her Christmas list. She said that as soon as Christmas is over, she stops celebrating. She said, “There’s no need to drag [the holiday] on.”

Senior Laney Miller agrees with Meredith. She said she believes that Christmas should be celebrated after Thanksgiving. She said, “It’s been a natural tradition in the family.” She said her family decorates the day after Thanksgiving, and two weeks before Christmas, she said her family picks out a real tree and puts it up.

Sophomore Travis Aranbert said he believes that Christmas should be celebrated when December starts. He said, “It seems right. The right time for eggnog, cookies, and presents.” He also said that Christmas music should be listened to on Dec. 1. Travis said that Christmas just isn’t about gifts. Travis said,“Christmas is about giving, not getting, but it’s also about Jesus.”

Some students say they celebrate Christmas early because it is their favorite holiday. Others say they celebrate the holiday a little later because of tradition or because it seems right, but whether it be any of  these options, there is one thing many students know. Christmas is just one of those holidays that no one can wait for.
