On Tues. Jan. 7, multiple fires tore through the hillsides of Palisades in Los Angeles, CA. The initial cause of the fire is still unknown, but is being investigated.
According to The Guardian, “over 88,000 residents have been under evacuation orders since the fires began. The fires are believed to have been started due to California’s dry climate.”
McIntosh senior Alexis Alden was in California when the fires first started.
“I visited California this past weekend [Jan. 9-12] and I received an evacuation warning so I couldn’t imagine what it’s like living there during this time,” Alden said.
As firefighters were putting fires out, Alden continuously checked in with friends and family, despite the distance.
“I am worried. My friends are updating me about their situations and it’s harder to communicate with them and check up on them,” she said.
Former McIntosh student Jayden Kypri, class of 2023, has family members who were impacted by the fires.
“They’re right up by the Getty Center. They got evacuated and the National Guard is still not letting them up the hill because of looters. It’s very disappointing, and they’re all super stressed. I feel really helpless from this far away,” Kypri said.
Junior Anna Dyachenko has friends located in California, and has concerns for her friends.
“Right now more than ever, I want to keep updated on how my friends are doing in socal and the updates on what the fires are damaging,” Dyachenko said.
