Final exams begin on Tuesday, Dec. 17. These exams mark the end of the first semester and final week is typically the last week that students are in school before semester break. Monday, Dec. 9, is notification day when students will be able to know whether they can be exempt from some of their exams or not.
End of Course (EOC) classes and Advanced Placement (AP) classes cannot be exempted. Assistant Principal Daniel Lakly broke down the details of exam exemptions.
“So if you’re enrolled in seven classes at Macintosh, you can do three [exemptions]. If you have a dual enrollment or an opt out, you only have six classes, you can only do two,” Lakly said.
There are two types of exemption options for students. Students will be able to choose only one exemption option. One option is the attendance exemption.
“You have to first have at least a 70 for a grade in class. It can’t be an EOC class and it can’t be an AP class, then you can have no more than five unexcused attendance occurrences,” Lakly said.
The other option is academic exemption. If students have a 95 or above in their classes students are allowed to exempt up to three classes.
“If you have a 95 or higher in an EOC or an AP, you can’t use [the exemption], you [have to] take those exams, and there’s no attendance tied to academic [exemptions],” Lakly said.
Lakly also had another important reminder for students.
“Another important thing that kids have to remember, to tell their parents, and this is especially for freshmen. A parent survey will open up in the Infinite Campus portal on Wednesday at four o’clock. Parents have to go in and take that survey to say, ‘Yes, it’s okay for my child to exempt,’ and they can go home early after the final exam period,” Lakly said.
