Editor’s Note: This is a developing story and the Trail will continue to update as needed.
On Thursday, Sept. 26, at 10 a.m., Fayette County Public Schools announced that school will be canceled tomorrow due to reported forecasts of Hurricane Helene hitting the Atlanta area tomorrow morning, bringing 60 mph winds to Georgia. At around 11 a.m. on Friday, Hurricane Helene is predicted to impact Fayette County, as the eye of the storm will be passing over the metro Atlanta area.
Hurricane Helene is moving through the Gulf of Mexico, making its way through Georgia as a tropical storm and coming to a stop around Tennessee. Yesterday on Sept. 25, Governor Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency for Georgia, and many schools made a decision to close. Today on Sept. 26, According to Atlanta News First, President Joe Biden approved Governor Brian Kemp’s declaration of emergency in Georgia. Fayette County was the last county in the surrounding area to close school in the wake of these recent weather concerns.
According to a post on Student Square, “Friday evening and extracurricular activities and weekend competitions may take place if circumstances allow.”
COMMUNITY CONCERNS
The Trail’s Facebook page listed the cancellations of after school activities on Thursday, Sept. 26, and community members posted comments.
On the FCBOE’s Facebook page, the Sept. 25 post “Fayette outscores state, country on SAT,” has 26 posts at press time, most commenting on the lack of communication about school closures. Concerns ranged from where students would wait for school buses, general student safety and requests for updates on any decisions regarding the weather.
At 10 a.m. on Thursday, the FCBOE Facebook page posted a statement closing schools Friday. There were 39 posts at press time.
While some comments criticized the district for waiting to close, some comments praised the school district for not closing on Thursday, as the storm wouldn’t hit Fayette County until after school had passed, and thanked the district for all they do to keep students safe.
STUDENT REACTIONS
Several students have expressed how they feel about the school closure.
“I’m glad school is being closed tomorrow, but the football game, like, I don’t mind since it’s an away game, but it’s the only disappointing thing,” sophomore Maggie Johnston said.
One student thought the school district would close on Friday.
“Honestly, I feel really good about it. What school would really have us going to school during a hurricane, really? It’s really good because I get to have a day off,” Phoenix Manley (10) said.
ACADEMICS
Assistant Principal Leon Hammond informed students and parents via Parent Square that Friday’s PSAT readiness activity would be rescheduled to Monday, Sept. 30.

The Varsity Volleyball team’s Senior Night was rescheduled due to Hurricane Helene’s effects. The event got moved to next week, but one of the two teams that were originally scheduled had to drop out due to prior commitments. The team is going to Pace Academy for a tournament on Saturday, Sept. 27. Due to the weather five teams have already dropped out.
The Chiefettes will not be attending the Northgate game on Saturday due to the weather.

MARCHING BAND
To prepare for competition season, the Spirit of McIntosh marching band has already had two Saturday practices in a row, according to brass team junior Chelby Gambrel. This means the band will not perform at Saturday’s rescheduled football game.
“I feel kind of relieved because it has been such a busy schedule for band right now,” Aimee Tapiz said, a senior and a percussionist.
“[Band Director Barbara Baker] told us we weren’t going to the [rescheduled Northgate game] during… third period,” Gambrel said. “She didn’t want us to have four Saturday events back to back. We have a competition next Saturday, so taking away all our Saturdays was too much.”
But not all band members are pleased the band will not be in the Northgate stands on Saturday.
“I’m sad the game got rescheduled because it’s taking away time for me to practice playing the clarinet in the stands,” Jing Ning Cernin (9) said.
