Peachtree City Makes History: Women to Hold Majority of City Council Seats in 2024
(Peachtree City, GA)– For the first time, women will hold a majority of the Peachtree City City Council seats. This historic achievement reflects the growing role of women in leadership positions.
“This milestone marks a new era of leadership, highlighting the diverse perspectives that drive our community’s growth and well-being,” said Mayor Kim Learnard, Peachtree City’s second female mayor.
Learnard is following in the footsteps of Vanessa Fleisch, who made history as the city’s first female mayor in 2014. Fleisch’s election marked a significant turning point for Peachtree City, and it paved the way for more women to step up and seek leadership roles.
Since 1974, less than a dozen women have ever served on the Peachtree City City Council. Following the election of Suzanne Brown and Laura Plauché Johnson though, women now hold three of Peachtree City’s five city council seats.
This feat is particularly significant given that the 2020 Census reported that 52% of Peachtree City’s population is female [SOURCE: https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/peachtreecitycitygeorgia]. Having a city council that reflects the demographics of the community is essential for effective representation and decision-making.
“As we move forward, we’ll certainly harness the power of our varied experiences to make informed decisions, foster innovation and ensure a brighter future for all of us,” Learnard concluded.
