Students set up food for the class party.

In Ms. Jan Hansen’s AP U.S. history classes, juniors had the opportunity to explore the era of the Great Depression in more depth. Students played the role of a person who lived in the 1920s, and they had to act as their characters for an entire class party on Friday, March 3. Each student had to bring a food, which was made during the Depression and had to dress as their assigned character during that time period.

Junior Max Ogg said, “I played a train porter. I also got to eat a mock apple pie, which was made from Ritz crackers. The Depression party was definitely a memorable experience.”

Ms. Hansen said, “I do the Great Depression party because I don’t think that students understand how much suffering occurred. I also think that it’s important to understand the way that the Depression changed eating. We eat pre-packaged foods now because of what happened in the Depression. Another reason that I do a party for the Great Depression is that it is fun for the students.”
