Ebola spreads to America

A Liberian man was diagnosed with the Ebola virus September 25 in Dallas, Texas. According to the BBC, Thomas Eric Duncan came into contact with the Ebola virus while he was in Liberia September 15. He is believed to have contracted the virus when transporting a woman to hospital in a wheelbarrow. He was then allowed to travel to the United States even though he had been in contact with Ebola patients because he gave false information on a questionnaire required for travel by the Liberian government.

After he landed in Texas, he checked into a local hospital with symptoms, but was released with antibiotics because a nurse failed to pass on the information that he had traveled to West Africa recently. He was readmitted to the hospital after coming into contact with nearly 100 people, including small children.

Sophomore Emilio De la Mora said, “I don’t feel threatened by Ebola as I believe that the United States has a healthcare system that can quickly isolate any cases of Ebola inside our borders.”
