Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy (93) passed away at 1:35 a.m. on September 8. Over the past year, he had been declining in health.

As noted in the program given at his funeral, Mr. Cathy was born on March 14, 1921. In 1946, he opened a tiny diner called the Dwarf Grill, which happened to be the birthplace of the renowned Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich. He founded the diner on the foundation of intelligent business sense, firm Christian faith and strong work ethic.  Truett Cathy’s Chick-fil-A has now become the United State’s biggest fast-food chicken restaurant chain based on yearly sales. This achievement is quite phenomenal noting that the business closes on Sundays for religious purposes.

On top of all of these successes, Mr. Cathy also founded the WinShape Foundation in 1984, which helps “shape winners” by aiding youth through scholarships and other programs such as the famous Camp WinShape. Mr. Cathy is survived by his wife Jeanette, his daughter Trudy Cathy White, his 2 sons Dan and Bubba Cathy, 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Sophomore Andrew Schlappi said, “[Mr. Cathy] was an excellent role model and an amazing man. His presence will be missed.”

Senior Naomi Sobel said, “Truett Cathy will live on through the faith he put in all aspects of his life. He is a man who never strayed from his beliefs and created a company that strives on compassion and surpassing the line of quality service and care. Truett not only impacted America through Chick-fil-A, but also WinShape camps that have opened up opportunity for inspiration and growth through so many lives. I am so grateful to have been impacted through his life and what he has created with it.”

Freshman Caroline Cameron stated, “[J]ust because [Truett Cathy] died physically, does not mean he died without putting himself in everyone’s hearts. He is still here with us, and his soul lives on through his company and great food.”

Truett Cathy was an inspirational figure to many, and his legacy as a business man and a Christ-follower will remain unforgotten for the ages to come.
