Ice Bucket challenge chills MHS students
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, while currently trending across the nation, has arrived at McIntosh. The challenge is simple, either pay a $100 donation to the ALS foundation, or make a $10 donation and dump a bucket of ice water on your head. Upon completing the challenge, you challenge a few friends. That is how the challenge spreads.
I surveyed 150 MHS students, 41% of which have already done the ice bucket challenge. Junior Abby Ott said, “I did it because I knew it would raise awareness [of ALS] and more people could learn about it and donate.” Freshmen Sara Norbeck and Maddie Sy said,”[The ALS ice bucket challenge was] a lot of fun to do with friends.”
The intention of the challenge is to raise money and awareness for ALS. The challenge includes making a $10 donation; however, my survey shows that 70% of students who did the challenge did not make their donations. There are multiple ways to make donations to the foundation. You can either go to http:www.alsa.org and make an online donation, or you can go to any Lady Chiefs Lacrosse player and buy a bracelet for $1. Both ways get your money to the foundation.
Meanwhile, the survey shows that the challenge has raised far more awareness for ALS than it did money. Statistics from the survey show that 75% of MHS students know exactly what the challenge is all about.
To the students, the challenge is mostly for fun. Junior Maddie Corley said the challenge was an invigorating experience. On the other hand, freshman Katie Ward said, ” [I] barely felt anything.”
