Pear trees return for another spring
The beginning of March has brought not only sunshine, warmth and the start of spring to McIntosh, but also another key element: the smell of the trees.
The trees, called Callery pear trees, are located in the courtyard, and while they bloom white flowers, they also produce a fish-like odor. The smell, which comes from the flowers of the tree, can carry throughout the school. Despite the great weather, the smell is often unbearable for students who wish to sit at the tables in the courtyard.
Senior Thomas Gotilla said, “I sit out at a table right underneath the trees, and sometimes the odor is so strong that it ruins my lunch, and I have to sit inside.”
With a handful of weeks left in the school year, the outside lunch-goers will just have to put up with the horrendous smell of the trees until the school year ends.
