Last semester, students voted for their peers in McIntosh’s first student council election in many years. Candidates campaigned at school with the aid of posters, t-shirts and stickers. Those running for student council president participated in a school-televised debate. The now elected student council and its president, senior Logan Austin, plan to implement new events at McIntosh.
Mr. and Miss McIntosh, the pageant that occurs on January 25 and awards scholarships to its winners, currently reigns as the student council’s top concern. They are planning and organizing the event and obtaining the scholarships with the money provided by the participants’ entrance fees.
Rumors concerning a possible Valentine’s Day dance have floated around McIntosh. McIntosh students may be happy to hear that the rumors are true. Logan said, “Right now, the decision is in the administration’s hands.” If the dance is approved, girls will be encouraged to ask guys out, a role reversal tradition better know as a Sadie Hawkin’s dance.
Another new idea being discussed is having movie nights on the football field. Students could snack on popcorn and other treats while viewing a movie projected onto a white sheet. Each grade level might have a seperate movie night, or students may all crowd onto the football field on the same night. The idea has yet to be developed fully.
As for the student council itself, members have settled into their roles comfortably. According to Logan, everyone does his or her job well and gets along with each other. Logan said that thoroughly enjoys the leadership position.
From this semester onward, the student council will attempt to contribute fresh ideas to the McIntosh experience. Events like the possible Valentine’s Day dance and movie night could become staples.
