McIntosh Boys and Girls soccer teams have reached the quarterfinals of the State Tournament which will be played on May 7.

The Boys team defeated Union Grove 1-0 on May 1 in the second round of their playoffs. The only goal came at the end of the first half from freshman Jackson Johnson. A clip of the goal can be found here.

“I guess I was just able to stay calm and cool under pressure,” said Johnson. “I know it’s all about technique and mentality, but it was a special moment.”

The girls beat Locust Grove 10-0 on a Mercy Rule at home.

“It was pretty cool that we were able to win the first two rounds 14-0 and 10-0,” said junior Morgan Yocum. “We’re feeling pretty good about going all the way.”

The Boys team will travel to play against Carrollton HIgh School. The Girls team will host Decatur High High School.

Both teams made it to the State Championship last year and lost. The boys lost 1-0 and the girls lost in penalty kicks after two overtime periods.

“Last year was very disappointing,” said Junior Pierce Strong. “The beauty is that we will have the chance to avenge ourselves this year. We’re really excited for this opportunity.”
