A new branch of speaking is being explored currently in Mr. Ward Abel’s debate class.  The class has switched temporarily from participating in debates to practicing speaking extemporaneously.  Students in the class choose three different topics, select one from the three, and then have five minutes to prepare a four-minute speech pertaining to the topic.  Students in the class are able to gain information on important topics, increase their vocabulary and practice speaking on the spot.

Class member and freshman Owen Henahan said, “In the beginning, extemporaneous was really difficult because it was different from what we regularly do, but as I kept speaking, I began to realize that extemporaneous speaking really is not that difficult if you can build off and elaborate on each thought.”
