Black Friday, one of the most popular shopping days of the year, is November 28, the day after Thanksgiving. The purpose of Black Friday has been evolving, and because of this change, it has moved from the early hours of Friday to the later hours of Thanksgiving. This change was made to lessen the chaos of Friday morning by getting customers to shop earlier. Therefore, fewer crowds should be out. Many people may rush to finish their Thanksgiving dinners with their families in order to catch the best sales and beat the crowds. Stores, such as Walmart and Target, open as early as 8:00 a.m. on Thanksgiving to start the Black Friday frenzy.
Chaos is inevitable, and there will be stories on the news the next day about people fighting over Christmas gifts. Sophomore Mackenzie Murdock said, “I was planning on going to Lenox for my Black Friday shopping until I remembered how chaotic that will be up there. I would rather stay in Peachtree City and not be trampled over, and I know for sure what I will be able to buy here unlike guessing in Atlanta.”
Television ads for this coming Black Friday have already aired. Companies have also been using social media, such as Vine, to advertise short six second commercials. According to the website CEA, Best Buy, Bass Pro Shop and Target are the top three advertisers for this annual event. Totals sales this year are estimated to be 36.7 billion; this amount is 1.7 percent more than last year’s profits.
Black Friday mainly breaks out in Peachtree City at the Avenue and Target Shopping Center. Campers begin to set up a week before this eventful night in order to be the first in line at Best Buy because TVs, computers and phone deals are popular among customers. Senior Olivia Trevena said, “I think it’s crazy every time I see the Best Buy customers camping weeks in advance.”
The popular boutique, Lizard Thicket, has customers lining up to shop around 1:00 a.m. even though their opening time is 6:00 a.m. Last year more than 200 people were waiting around opening time last year. Santa also came and visited the store handing out hot chocolate, free gift cards and earrings.
Target is offering deals on Xbox ones and PS4s this year. Senior Amelia Farrell said, “It was really cold last year, but the $10 jackets and $150 I saved were totally worth the four and a half hours in the line, and I cannot wait to do it again this year with my friends.”
Many people are saving for this event and use this day to shop for Christmas presents at discounted prices for people; they may even get a gift for themselves in the process. Junior Nicole Psomas said, “I can’t wait for this Black Friday because I have a car now, and it will be easier to get around with my friends to everywhere that we would like to shop.”
