McIntosh’s debate team has argued its way to the top. This year the debate team has been working hard to get their club off the ground. Considering that they had to start from scratch, that feat was not easy.

The team now holds four of the top debaters in Georgia: journalism’s own Senior Kyle Bligen, Junior Steven Black, Senior President Elizabeth Roshelli and Senior Alex Marty.

The McIntosh debate team, led by Ward Abel, were honored by the Fayette County Board of Education for their wins at the Georgia Forensic Coaches Association First and Second Year Championship on Monday, March 24.  Alex, Sophomore John Hamlin, Elizabeth and Freshman Christopher Carr finished in the top ten with their debates.

The debate team made history again  when they won the First Year Public Forum State Championship on February 8. The award has never been won by a McIntosh debate team.

Students who are on McIntosh’s debate team have to do hours of research, meet multiple times a week, perform mock debates and  stay up late to practice their speeches.

The debates range from political problems to social injustices. The debaters can expound upon anything that is related to the topic that they are given.

For students wanting to join the debate team, meetings are held every Wednesday; the next one is April 30.
