Corey Newton is the new assistant band director at McIntosh. Along with teaching three concert bands, Mr. Newton also helps The Spirit of McIntosh Marching Band. Along with Ms. Baker, the other band director, Mr. Newton teaches band at two elementary schools, Crabapple Lane and Peachtree City.
He said that because he loves the area and has heard good things about our bands’ reputation, Mr. Newton chose to work here at McIntosh. Mr. Newton said, “It’s been crazy busy, but it’s been a lot of fun,” he said. Last year, he taught chorus at Temple High School, but he said that he is glad to back in a ‘strictly band category.’
Mr. Newton said that he’s always wanted to be a teacher. When he learned to play the trumpet, he knew that teaching band was the way to go.
In his spare time, he likes to sing, shop, and, go to concerts and museums. He said that he is an open person who will try just about anything.
Mr. Newton was very involved in his high school. “I was in all the clubs, and band, and choirs,” he said.
His high school band director, once said, “If you don’t when you can, you won’t when you can’t.” Mr. Newton said that the lesson he took from that is to do things while the opportunity is right in front of you and don’t procrastinate and wait for things to happen for you, sometimes you have to make things happen for yourself.
