Lee Heeseung officially left the K-pop group ENHYPEN on March 10, 2026. The announcement was made by their agency, Belift Lab, which explained that Heeseung would depart from the group but remain signed to the company. After his departure, the remaining members—Jungwon, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, and Ni-ki—will continue promoting as a six-member group. According to Gulf News, the company announced that the decision came after discussions about the group’s future direction and Heeseung’s goals as an artist. The agency stated that Heeseung has a “distinct musical vision” that he wants to explore through solo music.

Although he is leaving the group, Heeseung will continue working under the same label and is preparing to release music as a solo artist.

However, as a fan, the explanation still feels incomplete. While the company described the decision as a “discussion,” it is difficult not to question whether it was truly equal or if it was heavily influenced by the company. Entertainment companies often have a great deal of control over idols’ careers, and because of that, it can be difficult for fans to fully believe that a member leaving a successful group was entirely their own choice. From my perspective, the situation feels more like a forced discussion where the outcome may have already been leaning in one direction.

Heeseung has been one of the most recognizable members of ENHYPEN since their debut. His vocals, stage presence, and leadership during performances helped define the group’s identity. Because of that, it feels strange that the solution to his artistic goals was leaving the group entirely rather than allowing him to explore solo work while staying in ENHYPEN. Many idols have successfully balanced group promotions and solo projects at the same time, which makes this decision feel unnecessary.

A good example of this is Choi Yeonjun from Tomorrow X Together. Yeonjun has been able to work on individual projects while still remaining an active member of the group. This kind of balance allows artists to grow creatively without separating them from the group that helped build their career. Because TXT and ENHYPEN are connected through the same larger company system under HYBE, it raises the question of why a similar arrangement could not have been made for Heeseung.

Following the announcement, Heeseung shared a handwritten letter with fans, known as ENGENE, thanking them for their support throughout his time in the group. In the letter, he explained that choosing to leave was difficult but that he wanted to challenge himself by exploring new opportunities and developing his own music.

The news led to strong reactions from fans around the world. Many supporters were surprised by the sudden announcement and began organizing online discussions and petitions asking the company to reconsider the decision. Some fans felt that Heeseung could have released solo music while still remaining a member of the group. Within the first day after the announcement, hundreds of thousands of signatures appeared on petitions calling for his return, and fans began organizing protest actions directed at the company.

One of the most visible forms of protest came through truck demonstrations sent to the company’s headquarters, where fans displayed messages demanding transparency and asking the company to reverse the decision. Supporters argued that Heeseung has played a crucial role in ENHYPEN’s sound and performances since their debut, making his sudden departure difficult for many fans to understand.

Despite the protests and the massive online reaction, Belift Lab has continued to stand by its decision. In statements following the backlash, the company repeated that the decision was made after discussions about the group’s future and Heeseung’s artistic direction. Reports also indicated that the demanding schedule of ENHYPEN made balancing both a full solo career and group promotions difficult.

Even so, the response from fans has not slowed down. Across social media, hashtags calling for Heeseung’s return have continued trending, and discussions about the situation have spread beyond the ENGENE fandom. For many fans, the issue is no longer just about one member leaving a group—it has become a conversation about how much control entertainment companies have over artists’ careers.

ENHYPEN debuted in 2020 after forming through the survival show I-LAND, and their January 2026 album The Sin: Vanish became the final release featuring all seven original members.

Moving forward, ENHYPEN will continue promotions as a six-member group while Heeseung begins his career as a solo artist. However, many fans—including myself—still feel that this situation represents a missed opportunity. There are many examples in the K-pop industry of artists balancing both group and solo careers, and it is hard to believe that this option was impossible here.

Personally, the situation feels less like a natural career change and more like a decision shaped heavily by the company’s priorities. Heeseung helped build ENHYPEN’s identity from the very beginning, and removing him from the group entirely feels like an extreme solution to a problem that could have been solved differently.

Even though Belift Lab has insisted that the decision will not change, fans have not given up hope. The protests, petitions, and continued online campaigns show how much support Heeseung still has around the world. Many fans believe that someday there could still be a way for him to collaborate with ENHYPEN again—or even return to the group. Until then, the situation remains one of the most debated moments in ENHYPEN’s history, and for many supporters, it still does not feel like the story is truly over.
