The Golden Globes Recap

The Golden Globes is an annual award ceremony hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association that honors actors for outstanding achievement in film. The annual awards show surfaced things like outrageous outfits, new representation, and old controversies.

This year was a big year for representation and diversity in the industry. The Golden Globes Award Ceremony was hosted by an Asian woman. This was the first American awards show that was hosted by an Asian woman, Sandra Oh. Oh’s opening speech started with light jokes but then transformed into an important message. She spoke about how diversity in Hollywood is increasing on and off movie screens. “I wanted to be here to look out into this audience, and witness this moment of change,” Oh said during her opening speech. Not only was there ethical representation, but also more gender representation. Regina King made a speech when accepting her award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture about women’s representation. She mentioned that for all the movies she produces for the next two years, women will comprise 50 percent of the productions.

Although this year was a year of diversity in the award show, there was an old controversy that was brought back. Second host, Andy Samberg, made a racial joke towards the Black Panther movie. The joke was: “If you told me as a kid, growing up in the Bay, there’d be a movie called Black Panther that starts off in Oakland, this is not what I would have imagined. Ryan, was there, like, a bunch of old members of the actual Black Panther Party saying, ‘I can’t even get an audition.’” After he finished up with a “just kidding,” Twitter users instantly berated the joke.

Like every year before, there was a handful of outfits. For example, the glittery harness worn by actor Timothee Chalamet. Chalamet walked down the red carpet strapped into a harness made by Louis Vuitton with his mom around his arm. Lady Gaga, actress and artist, made a splash on the red carpet with her hair matching her dress. She had a large Cinderella-like gown made by Valentino with ice blue hair to match. Actress Janelle Manáe had a look to remember, though, with a large golden cylindrical hat and a golden belt by Chanel Designers.

Actress Glenn Close won Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture for The Wife. Christian Bale won Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Vice. Bohemian Rhapsody won best Drama Motion Picture. Roma won Foreign Language Film. Ben Whishaw won Best supporting actor for Mary Poppins Returns.
