AP Lang students and AP Lit students from Ms. Shery Kearney, Ms. Maggie Walls and Ms. Andrea Lakly’s classes were given the opportunity to attend the play “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Next” at Alliance Theater in Atlanta for free on Sept. 17 .

The play is an adaptation of a book featuring abused insane asylum patients who encounter the psychotic McMurphy, who is committed to the asylum instead of serving out his jail sentence at a work camp. McMurphy initially thinks that this sentence it better than going to the work-camp, but he realizes that he was wrong- the asylum is ruled by a tyrannous nurse named Nurse Ratched, who emasculates the men under her care until they become lifeless and docile, causing them to become sicker in their condition rather than better.

Because of the adult content, this play was only available to juniors and seniors in AP Lang or AP Lit., college-level courses.

Insane Asylum patients talk and converse with new patient McMurphy. Notice how compared to the other characters McMurphy has his sleeves rolled up and keeps his persona, while the other characters clothing is yellowed and suggests age and defeat.
