Next year an AP art history class will be offered as an elective for sophomores, juniors and seniors. The class will be taught by Ms. Faubel, an English teacher, who studied art history in college as an undergraduate.
Art history is the study of the history of visual arts, and it includes everything from paintings to sculptures to architecture. The students will study visual works from prehistoric era cave paintings to works done into 20th century.
Art history students will also study philosophies of art and discuss why people produce art, what function art has in society and how art shapes culture and politics. The class deals with not only interpreting art but also with analyzing the reason and history behind art. Mrs. Faubel said, “If you’re interested in philosophy and history, it’s a good course. [Analyzing art] is similar to the way we approach a poem in English class. We look at how all of the elements build meaning.”
