“Advanced Warfare” redesigns “Call of Duty” franchise

Dec 2, 2014
Gamers gained access to the servers for “Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare” on Nov. 3. It is the eleventh game in the “Call of Duty” Series. The game was developed by Sledgehammer Games, High Moon Studios and Raven Software, and then published by Activision and Square Enix. “Advanced Warfare” has three different game types: Campaign, Multiplayer and Exo-Survival.
The campaign for “Advanced Warfare” was consistent with those of other games recently released in the series. The campaign began by introducing new features included in the game, such as new equipment and abilities. As a player moves on in the game, different equipment becomes available to the player. The new features include upgraded abilities, upgraded weapons and player customizations for a multiplayer character.
These new additions are useful; however, they make the game unrealistic. In the beginning of the campaign, for example, one of the steps in the third level is to jump from one moving bus to another using magnetic gloves to maintain a grip. The player repeats this action six times, all while avoiding the computer controlled enemies that are shooting at the player. Another unrealistic part of the game is the exo-suits. These exo-suits allow a player to double-jump, fly down to the ground and turn invisible.
The new multiplayer aspect added to “Advanced Warfare” is Exo-Survival. The game type is similar to the survival game mode of “Modern Warfare 3.” Each game of Exo-Survival has 25 rounds. These games can be played on any multiplayer map on “Advanced Warfare”: with friends, alone or with random players across the world. During the game, players have access to score-streaks that can be reused after a character generates the required amount of score. Also, in the game, players can choose between three different exo-suits. The heavy exo-suit allows the player to have more health and call in a stronger score-streak. The specialist exo-suit allows the character to double jump, move faster and have lighter score-streaks. The middle class exo-suit allows players to double jump, gain increased health and achieve medium score-streaks. The heavier the score-streak in this mode, the more score is required to achieve the streak. During the game, upon completing each round, players are rewarded with ammo, upgraded guns, AI players or AI score-streaks. This process is similar to the official multiplayer.
The multiplayer aspect to the game involves leveling up a player’s character, competing against thousands of players worldwide and unlocking new equipment. Similar to other “Call of Duty” games in the past, the multiplayer aspect contains a full range of different game types for different playing styles. “Advanced Warfare” includes fan favorites like Team Deathmatch, Free-For-All, Kill Confirmed, Search And Destroy, Search and Rescue, Capture the Flag and Domination. New to the game are game modes Momentum and Uplink. Each game mode has its own leaderboards for players’ performances in the game, as well as the overall leaderboard that includes all game modes into consideration.
“Advanced Warfare” also redesigned the League Play aspect from “Black Ops II.” In the new mode, Ranked Play, players compete in a four-versus-four game on multiple maps in multiple game modes. Winning or losing the game affects the league into which a player is placed. All players start in the Bronze league and must earn 100 points to be promoted to silver. After the 100 points are earned, the player must win two of their next three games in order to move on to the new league.
The multiplayer aspect offers players something different from other games because of the new abilities. If players want to play without all the new abilities, they can play one of the four game modes located in the classics playlist. This disables all exo-suit abilities including the double jump and any abilities requiring the exo-suit.
“Advanced Warfare” has changed multiple aspects of the “Call of Duty” series, but it does so in a beneficial way to the players and balances the interaction between veteran players and players that are new to the franchise.
