The third movie of Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy was released on Friday, Nov. 21.
The movie follows the life of Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence, in District 13, which was believed to have been destroyed by the Capitol. District 13 has begun a rebellion by rallying other districts against the Capitol in hopes to turn all districts of Panem into a democracy. District 13 is using the “Mockingjay” Katniss Everdeen as the symbol of the rebellion.
In the first two stories of the Hunger Games trilogy, Katniss defies the odds and wins the Hunger Games competitions, in which two teenage contestants from each district are sent into an arena to fight to the death. In the first story, both Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, win the competition for the first time in history. Typically, there is only one victor. In the second story, the Hunger Games features previous victors from each district, including Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. The Capitol holds this competition in hopes of killing off Peeta and Katniss who have mocked the Capitol in the previous games.
Students are looking forward to seeing the movie. Senior Melanie Garlock said,”I volunteer as tribute to see Mockingjay Part 1!” Sophomore Victor Cama said, “I am looking forward to seeing the movie, but I am concerned about how they are splitting [Mockingjay] into two parts. Part 1 will leave viewers on a cliffhanger, and they will have to wait another year for part 2.”
