Possible “albums of the summer” converge on the horizon

Lana Del Rey’s “Ultraviolence,” Ed Sheeran’s “x” and 5 Seconds of Summer’s debut are all poised to be possible albums of the summer.
While this year’s summer anthem remains up in the air, pointing out the possible “albums of the summer” proves less difficult. These albums will become the background of summer, whether nearly every song is radio friendly or not. According to the hype and critical reception of the lead singles of their respective upcoming albums, Lana Del Rey, 5 Seconds of Summer and Ed Sheeran all are positioned to have albums of the summer.
Lana will jump into the summer album scene with “Ultraviolence” on June 17. Although Lana is not keen on marketing her singles toward radio play, her music somehow finds its way to the charts. Her first album, although barely heard on mainstream radio, made a wave in the indie music scene, and some argue it was the alternative album of the winter season. With the hype of “West Coast” and of herself carrying her, Lana is poised to mimic the reception of her debut with “Ultraviolence,” taking the position of the alternative summer album.
5 Seconds of Summer, the pop band responsible for “She Looks So Perfect,” shall release their self-titled debut June 27. Considering the positive reception of “She Looks So Perfect” and of their current single, “Don’t Stop,” their self-titled debut is likely to debut high on the Billboard charts. Their energetic, poppy chorus-heavy sound is likely to nail their debut as an album of the summer.
Ed Sheeran, with his recent change in sound to a more pop, R&B flavor is also likely to make an chart impact with his upcoming effort, “x,” which is to be released June 23. The infectious “Sing” currently continues to climb the charts, gaining ground each week on Billboard’s “Hot 100.” If the rest of “x” follows in the footsteps of “Sing,” Ed Sheeran has an album of the summer on his hands.
However, there can always be a surprise entry in the field for album of the summer. Lucy Hale of “Pretty Little Liars” fame may catch attention with her debut. Chris Brown may finally release his long-awaited “X” album. As of right now though, Lana, 5 Seconds of Summer and Ed seem to have little competition aside from each other.
