Christina Perri’s “Head or Heart” tour stops at the Buckhead Theatre

On Wednesday, April 30, Christina Perri headlined her 33 stop “Head of Heart” tour, which began on April 4,2014 and will end on May 26, 2014 at the Buckhead Theatre in Atlanta.

Her opening act was seventeen-year-old Jasmine van den Bogaerde, who goes by the stage name “Birdy” and is a native of the United Kingdoms, who has been performing internationally since her cover of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love” became popular when she was 14.

The Chick-fil-a Classically-trained pianist and guitarist took the stage with her two other band mates who accompanied her with the bass and the backup keyboard. Birdy began her thirty minute set by singing “Shelter” by the xx and “People Help the People” by Cherry Ghost. From her album “Fire Within,” she sang “Wings” and “Words” and sang her rendition of “Skinny Love.”

Birdy’s vocals and stage presence are reminiscent of Lorde, both of whom stay true to their voice and style. Her song lyrics were free of predictable melodies and commercialized sound, and her performance highlighted her effortless range and her eminent passion. Although she is young, her performance was similar to that of a seasoned professional.

Christina Perri, an Atlantic Recording artist, performed an 18-song set list including songs “Trust,” “Shot Me,” “Run,” “Distance,” “Sea of Lovers,” “Burning Gold,” “The Words,” “Butterfly,” “Arms,” “Lollipop,” “A Thousand Years,” “Be My Forever,” “Please, Please,” “Human,” “I Believe,” “Penguin,” “Jars of Hearts” and “I Don’t Wanna.”

Perri began performing a capella and later accompanied herself on both the guitar and piano. Her guitarist, John Hanson, accompanied her in a duet of “Be My Forever,” which was co-written by Ed Sheeran.

Perri has a powerhouse voice that is juxtaposed with her small-framed body. Her vocal range, similar to Birdy’s, appears to transition effortlessly from the highest to the lowest of notes.

Senior Julia Roberts said “Christina Perri had this amazing energy that lit up the room. She created a show that connected performer and audience. Her vocals, energy and overall performance were excellent, and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy tickets to another one of her shows.”
