Foster the People releases the infectious coming of age album “Supermodel”

The album cover for “Supermodel” could represent the pressure Foster the People felt to continue the success of “Pumped Up Kicks.”
After the out-of-nowhere success of their single “Pumped up Kicks,” Foster the People returns with their album “Supermodel.”
Most of “Supermodel” packs few surprises in terms of music. The instrumentation is less heavy-handed than “Torches.” However, a majority of the tracks maintain the energetic, catchy reputation the band gained through the singles released off their last album. Only the last three tracks of the album deviate from the formula, with their much slower beats and stripped down production.
However, there is evident growth present in the lyrics. Foster the People made a wise decision in making “Coming of Age” as the album’s lead single. The song summarizes what this album is about. “Supermodel” is the band’s coming of age. After getting their taste of success with “Pumped Up Kicks” and of defeat with the lackluster performance of their follow singles, the band knows how fickle mainstream pop music culture can be.
Growing up is learning how to handle the beautiful and the harsh lessons of life and in terms of pop music, Foster the People is currently experiencing the turbulence of that time period. This album expresses hope for and amazement at the world, yet also despondency and disgust at the same time — just like a teenager becoming aware of just how gray the world can be.
Many critics that review this album compare it to the band’s previous album, “Torches.” However, listeners should not be tricked into thinking this album is a rip-off or a sequel to “Torches.” Because of the lyrics and instrumentation, this album gives off a more turbulent vibe than the last.
Anyone who wants to listen to “Supermodel” may check out the album on Spotify or purchase it on iTunes or at a local superstore.
