Music Midtown sweeps stage
On September 21, McIntosh students were in one of two places: at the homecoming dance or at Music Midtown in Piedmont Park, Atlanta. Music Midtown is an annual music festival that Atlanta hosts consisting of multiple bands and artists. Compared to last year’s lineup of many popular bands and artists such as Pearl Jam, T.I, and Neon Trees, this year’s lineup was not only more diverse, but was also planned to result in the highest number of attendees in the history of Music Midtown.
Music Midtown started as a small gathering of bands on undeveloped land in 1994. Founded by Alex Cooley and Peter Conlon, the Music Midtown festival started in Centennial Olympic Park but moved to Piedmont Park after its 4 year hiatus from 2006 to 2010. Music Midtown started as a one-day event, then eventually evolved into a 3-day weekend event, and finally with Peter Conlon narrowed it down to two diverse days.
The lineup for the 2013 Music Midtown festival was as follows: Friday consisted of the bands Journey, Jane’s Addiction, 2 Chainz, Phoenix, Cake, North Mississippi Allstars, The Mowgli’s, and Drivin N Cryin. Saturday’s lineup consisted of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queen of the Stone Age, Imagine Dragons, Weezer, Kendrick Lamar, Arctic Monkeys, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Tegan and Sara, The Black Lips, Reignwolf, The Neighbourhood, ZZ Ward, Mona, and Capital Cities. “Early Bird” tickets bought before August 1st were $40 on Friday and $65 on Saturday, while regular tickets bought after August 1 were $50 on Friday and $75 on Saturday. Although they are missing out on hearing the legendary Journey band play, many Mcintosh students are only going on Saturday because there are more bands and no 2Chainz. Out of a poll of 10 random McIntosh students who are going to Music Midtown, 90% of the students are going only on Saturday, with 10% going both days.
The cheapest tickets on Saturday were the V.I.P with a price of $276, and two-day tickets being $128.30. Students that didn’t feel like dancing on a Saturday night, a great alternative would be living it up at the 2013 Music Midtown Festival.
