As well as being named the third-most powerful celebrity by Forbes magazine in 2012, singing sensation and Canadian heartthrob Justin Bieber recently grabbed another award. While he did not win another Grammy or People’s Choice Award, Bieber became the most followed person on Twitter, topping fellow pop star Lady Gaga.
TwitterCounter.com, a site that provides daily records of Twitter following information, showed that the 18-year-old singer ended Lady Gaga’s two year reign which began back in August 2010.
Bieber now takes the lead with 33.36 million followers. Lady Gaga has dropped to second place with 33.35 million followers. Katy Perry follows in third with 31.51 million followers. Rihanna is in fourth place with 27.96 million, followed by President Barack Obama with 26.21 million. With 23.38 million, Britney Spears is six in the twitter top 100. Pop/country icon Taylor Swift is seventh with 23.2 million. Even reality star Kim Kardashian cracks the top ten with 17.23 million followers.
Bieber’s interaction on Twitter allows for his followers to be a part of the design process of his current projects and tour plans. The social-media networking site allows for celebrities to interact with fans on a more personal level, attributing to career success and stronger fan bases.
