Bahamas’ runner dives to beat American

American Allyson Felix was set to win gold in the Women’s 400m at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games on Monday, August 15. The race came down to a photo finish win when Felix crossed the line on foot, and Shaunae Miller of the Bahamas dove across the finish line. When the officials released the times, Felix came up just short and received the silver medal. After news of Miller’s dive got out, people on social media began to debate the fairness of Miller’s dive because a track race should be won on foot. However, other people argue that Miller fairly beat Felix because she crossed the finish line first, and that is all that matters.

At McIntosh, students have opinions of their own about this controversy. Senior Kristen Ford said, “Shaunae Miller won fairly. Whoever’s body crosses the line first should be the winner of the race because winners are winners: even if they cheat.”

However, senior Carolyn Ann Behnken said, “Track is meant to be won and lost on foot. Diving is another Olympic sport, and the two should not be combined. Allyson Felix should have taken home the gold.”
