MHS Lady Chiefs Volleyball Set Eyes on the State Championship

After what many considered a disappointing end to their impressive season last year, the McIntosh High School Lady Chiefs volleyball team is back and better than ever. After several games so far this season, the team is undefeated and is making their way to the top once again.

Sophomore Jessie Doyal said, “This year we’re all more motivated to win state and get a revenge by winning a state title. Our team this year is already really, really close because we’ve all been playing since middle school or longer together.”

Senior Lynsey Hamlin, a team captain, said, “I’m so excited. I’m on the court with my best friends. Last year our team was really close, but this year we are just as close and we’re all psyched to try even harder than last year to win state. It’s been a pretty smooth season so far. All the new girls are amazing and fit in so well into our team chemistry and atmosphere. It’s going to be a great season, I can just tell.”

Senior Olivia Stewart, another team captain, said, “The team is connecting so well already. We’ve won both of our first games and I’m hoping we continue with this winning streak like we did last year. I couldn’t have asked for better new players. All the new girls are so skilled and connecting so well with the rest of the team, and I am just hoping that we can continue as far as we did last year. It’s been a great start to a season and I can’t wait to see how far we can advance this year.”

The Lady Chiefs have been on a winning streak so far this season. Their next game is today, September 12, against Fayette County High School. The McIntosh Volleyball team has a current streak of 7 wins. The ladies won their first two games with set scores of 2-0 against Dunwoody and Lovett. McIntosh also won against Newnan by a score of 3-2, then continued to win against Northside and Northgate with set scores of 2-0. On August 29, they won against the Galloway Scots with a set score of 2-0. As their winning streak continues, they’re moving up the rankings and hoping to make their way to the state championship. rankings move higher and higher up as they make their way to the first place rank in the state of Georgia this year.

Making it to the top is a focus for the team after their late loss loss last year. The pressure is on to win a state ring this year.

Last year, the girl’s volleyball team finished their regular season with an overall (20-6) and made their way to the area tournament, where they won both of their first game sets (2-0) and earned eligibility for the area tournament championship.. There, the team lost with a final score of 3 to 2 against Whitewater. Moving on to state playoffs, the girls won the first four rounds for the first time since 2013. During the third round of the state tournament, the Lady Chiefs won all three sets, which allowed them to advance to the final four of the state competition.

After winning all of the first three rounds in the state tournament, the team made their way to the final four, where they competed for their spot in the championship game. The team then won the sets by 3 to 0, which secured their spot in the 2016 volleyball state championship game. The team played against Buford for the state title. The ladies played 4 sets, but the game unfortunately ended with a set score of 3 to 1, and the McIntosh varsity team placed second in the state.
