Going into the region championship, the Chiefs were 41-0 in the region over the past two seasons, and they were looking to win their second region championship in program history.

The Chiefs’ offense started off slow, letting Mundy’s Mill take a 11-5 lead during the first quarter, but they ended the quarter on a 13-0 run to take a 20-14 lead. The second quarter was a close one with Mundy’s Mill not going away, but the Chiefs took a five point lead into the half. At the half, senior Will Washington led the team with 13 points and senior Isaac Kellum followed with seven.

In the third quarter, the offense still had not found its spark, and the Chiefs and Tigers were tied at 45 going into the final eight minutes. The Chiefs finally got the spark they needed when Mundy’s Mill committed a technical foul early in the fourth quarter, and the Chiefs built on their lead quickly. With 1:34 left in the fourth, the Chiefs had outscored the Tigers 18-2 and were up 63-47. The defense gave up eight more points, and the offense scored six more points for a final of 69-55.

Will led the team with 24 points. Seniors Chase Walter and Jordan Lyons both had 11 points. Senior Dishon Lowery finished with eight. Senior Braxton Shaw had six, and senior Ulysses Brown had two points.

The win over Mundy’s Mill gave the Chiefs their second region title in program history with the first coming from last season’s win over Drew, and the Chiefs have remained undefeated in the region for two seasons. State playoffs start on Wed. Feb. 17 when the Chiefs take on Carver High School (Columbus) at home.
