Track places first and second at county championship

The McIntosh boys track and field team won the county championship, and the girls placed second on Saturday, March 22,. The meet was highlighted by outstanding individual and relay performances and several event sweeps in which MHS placed first, second and third in a single event.

On the boys side, MHS placed first with 204 points, followed by Starr’s Mill (165 points) and Sandy Creek (100 points). In field events, senior Cameron Sims won the triple jump and placed third in the long jump, senior Travis Bertke placed second in the shot put and junior Ben Naber placed third in the discus. The relay team of junior Nasir Mills, senior Victor Nguyen, junior Khadim Jones and senior Sebastian James won an exciting 4×100 meter race in 42.57, edging out Our Lady of Mercy by just .01 seconds. The 4×400 team of senior Michael Daprano, senior Johnathan Hall, junior Khadim Jones and senior Taylor Huntley also won a close race over rival Starr’s Mill in 3:28.07. In the hurdles, senior Michael Daprano placed third in the 110m and second in the 300m. In sprinting, senior Sebastian James placed second in the 100m dash, senior Darious Stokes placed second in the 200m dash and junior Khadim Jones placed second in the 400m dash. On the distance side, senior Josh Mattingly won the 3200m and placed second in the 1600m. MHS swept the 800m with seniors Taylor Huntley, Josh Reynolds and Johnathan Hall placing first, second and third.

The junior varsity boys team placed second. Sophomore JP Caldwell won the high jump, 100m and 200m. Sophomore Alan Bowers won the two mile and placed second in the mile. Sophomore Tyler Nigro, who also plays on the MHS baseball team, placed second in the 800m. Sophomore Alex Wilson placed third in the two mile. Freshman Brayden Salyers placed second in the 110 meter hurdles. Sophomore Brandon McDowell placed second in the 200m dash.

On the girls side, MHS finished second (146 points) behind Starr’s Mill (196). Fayette County finished third with 116 points. The girls 4×800 meter relay team of seniors Joy Cummings and Lauren Wilson, junior Camille Norman and sophomore Carson Silbert won the event. In field events, senior Airyn Nash placed second in triple jump, freshman Monique Atkinson placed third in triple jump and junior Morgan Frederick placed third in high jump. In sprints, senior Haley Hollimon placed third in the 100m and 200m dashes, and senior Joy Cummings won the 400m. Sophomore Nicole Zaubi placed second in the two mile. In the half mile, sophomore Alyssa LeClaire won, and junior Tarna Zander-Velloso placed third. MHS swept the mile with sophomores Nicole Zaubi and Alyssa LeClaire and junior Tarna Zander-Velloso placing first, second and third.

The junior varsity girls team placed fourth. Sophomore Guadalupe Pena placed second in the 800m and third in the 1600m. Sophomore Maddie Smith placed second in both the mile and two mile. Sophomore Kirsten Fink placed third in high jump. Sophomore Jamilla Clark placed third in discus.
