American flags hang in every classroom at McIntosh. Students have the choice to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance each morning. This choice is one of the freedoms that the U.S. offers its citizens, and this freedom appeals to people living in countries with harsher laws. These choices are one of the factors that already makes America great.

As the presidential election of 2016 came to an end, debates about the result began to break out: particularly having to do with Donald Trump’s campaign slogan. Trump’s slogan, “Make America Great Again,” emphasizes the fact that he believes America is not great right now. However, the United States allows for many more freedoms for all races and genders than do some other countries. For example, women in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to drive cars, a law which is unheard of in the U.S. The high immigration rates coming into the U.S. prove that the U.S. has more enticing qualities and more opportunities for progression than those offered in many other countries. A few seniors at McIntosh shared their opinions about what factors would make America great or why it already is great.

Senior Kristen Ford said, “America is already great, but everyone has room for improvement.”

Senior Gaby Schwingshakl, said “We are very blessed to live in America because it’s one of the best countries in the world, but in order to make it great again, we need to accept each other and work toward a common goal.”

Senior Kayla Hort said, “America is already pretty great, especially compared to other countries, but our country is no where near perfect and could use some help to be more united.”

Senior Chloe Sypes said, “America does not need to be made great again. President Obama has done an excellent job to sustain the economy and make jobs as well as protecting America’s people. For the next 70 days while Obama is in office, America is in capable hands and will continue to soar like America’s national symbol: the bald eagle.”
